Low power optics - saving the planet one link at a time

Waystream’s super low power SFP use up to 67% less energy to perform the same function as a standard SFP, but it works just the same. The SFPs are applicable in any network that uses fiber optical communication, such as datacenter, fiber to the home access networks, enterprise networks and more.

The reduced power consumption turns into significant cost savings for network equipment as the power consumption – and cooling needs – are reduced. Reduced power consumption also means reduced greenhouse gas emission as a positive effect.

EXAMPLE

According to Eurostat the industry price per kWh of electricity in Germany in 2016 was 0.149€. The average carbon dioxide (greenhouse gas) emission generated in Germany per kWh is about 400g according to electricitymap.org.

A network with 10,000 fibre broadband customers will reduce its electricity consumption by up to 61,000 kWh which corresponds to saving over 9,000 €/year. In addition the network emits up to 24 tonnes less carbon dioxide each year which means less contribution to global warming.

In addition, the reduced power consumption means less heat generated and this converts to additional savings in installation sites with active cooling such as datacenters and street cabinets.

The super low power SFP is available in these variants

  • 1Gbit/s bidirectional 1310/1550nm  (SPF-1000BASE-BX20-D1550LCP, SFP-1000BASE-BX20-U1550LCLP)
  • 1Gbit/s 20km single mode 1310nm (SFP-100BASE-LX20-MLP)
  • 10Gbit/s 20km single mode 1310nm (SFP-10GE-LR20LP)

The super low power power SFP modules from Waystream consume as little as 0.3W compared to a standard SFP that is in the range of 0.8-1W. This enable a significantly lower power consumption, saving as much as 20-25% of the overall power consumption of a typical 24-port FTTH switch.

The super low power SFP allows you to reduce the electricity bill and also make the world a little bit better!
