Waystream introduces telemetry in the fiber access

Swedish tech-company Waystream, a leading provider of switches for fiber and city networks, introduces telemetry data collection in their line of access-products. Telemetry enables operators to get a better insight into their networks performance and ability to deliver services.

The telemetry function in short means that switches actively collects measurements - over 1300 different datapoints are initially supported - and send these to a database at short intervals. The data provides an insight into the network performance and helps operators identify and resolve problems that might affect the service quality in the network.

"The improved diagnostics capability that the telemetry function enable means that operators can work proactively with problems in the network before they affect customers. It also helps with forensic analysis of problem to get a better understanding of what went wrong and how to avoid it in the future", says Fredrik Nyman, product manager at Waystream.

The telemetry function is designed so it can be used directly with leading database solutions. This allows operators to get started quickly and benefit from the telemetry data using popular and well known tools for visualization and analysis such as InfluxDB and Grafana. It also enables use of advanced methods such as artificial intelligence (AI/ML) to spot trends and find important thresholds that affect service quality in the network.

"Traditional, passive, network monitoring of links and equipment is no longer sufficient to determine that the network is working. For critical infrastructure - which city networks have become - there is a need for a deeper insight into how the network behaves. The telemetry function in Waystreams access switches enables this in a part of the network where it has previously been missing", says Fredrik Nyman.

The active collection is designed to be independent of a central system. The collection will continue and be stored locally in the switch until it can be uploaded if a temporary communications problem prevents immediate upload. Today such measurements would be lost if using traditional collection methods. With telemetry, the data can be recovered to get a complete view of what went wrong when analysing issues.

The telemetry feature is part of Waystreams iBOS software for access-switches. Customers with support agreements will automatically get the new functionality as part of an upgrade.
